What happens is the selling of one's soul, the loss of integrity, the dilution of authenticity. But, my dear friend, that may be a temporary abberation. Think of it as the burn and pain that one experiences in a good workout. You work the muscles to a point of fatigue, until you are unable to lift half of the weight that you started with, but in the following days, you are all the stronger for it.
One thing I just learned about meme wars is to figure out ways to speak to the "otherside" in their own language if you have to live around them. Offer them resources they can immediately use without directly contradicting their world view, or patronizing them with your superior worldview.
Jesus said in essense to love your enemy as yourself---to pray for and bless your enemy. "Ye have heard that it has been said, ?Thou shall love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy.? But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that despitefully use you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven."
http://www.stanford.edu/group/King/publications/sermons/571117.002_Loving_Your_Enemies.htmlI think this is so powerful because it makes ignorance the enemy, and forces us to find nonconfrontational, creative, magical, transcendent ways of dealing with difficult human dynamics. In this way every difficulty in human relations turns out to be an exercise in our evolution.
