as heartmind's local correspondent, i feel compelled to say some words about yesterday's tragedy at virginia tech. jimtzu lamented the media coverage of the events, and i hope this doesn't make things worse. i'm about 50 miles from blacksburg and every couple of months  for the last 30 years i have taken a bath, jumped in my vehicle and driven to town to shop at the natural foods store, the bookstores, go to the tech library, etc.. It has been kind of a cultural lifeline for me....my neighbors in burkes garden were the mosses. old joe was on the board of directors (visitors?regents?) at tech, his son my friend bob was captain of the corps of cadets, and dear joe who sold me my farm was co-captain of 1962 hokie football. i have been friends with several of the coaches over the years, and many of our local kids go to college there. yesterday afternoon we frantically tried to contact our engineering school friend. she is o.k. ...i hope this isn't heard as a sad henry story, but rather as trying to put a heartmind face on this tragedy. ...i'll be taking my regular trip there in 2 or 3 weeks and give you an update....love to hokie nation pray..henry

Thank you for this Henry.  My thoughts go out to you and the victims and the community.

There could be a positives from this tragedy, seeing so many of us have been touched by it.  Yes, the church bells rang here in Portland, Oregon.

a very emotional day for hokie nation. today is va. tech's first home football game since last springs tragedy. i believe if i went to the top of henry mountain, i could hear the roar of the crowd in lane stadium 40 miles away. its not about football....yesterday was hokie pride day and i wore my maroon and orange. the cashier at the store was wearing her hokie nation t-shirt, and we shared that dreadful instant of recognition that too many felt this past april. i left the store, forgetting my change. pulling out of the parking lot, here comes running the cashier and hands me my 19 dollars... we are hokies pray... henry
